Sunrise Coal, LLC has proposed to open a coal mine in southwest Vermilion County, IL. They are targeting village and county officials in order to secure access to the resources and infrastructure they need to operate – including large amounts of water – in spite of growing community concerns about the negative impacts a new coal mine would have on local land, water, air and communities.

Tonight, Monday July 30th, 2012 at 7:00pm, the Homer Water Committee will meet to consider whether or not to sell the community’s water to the mine for washing coal. Homer residents and members of the public are invited to weigh in on the proposal as the Village considers whether  this is the best use of the community’s water supply.

Tonight’s meeting will be one of the only opportunities Homer residents have to share with the Village their concerns about:

  • additional infrastructure costs to the village
  • liabilities for the village, including limited water supply
  • potential limits to future growth
  • historical water shortages and concern for the future
  • water quality and quantity impacts to nearby rural wells and the Salt Fork

Additionally, tonight’s meeting is an opportunity to thank the Village for deciding to seek detailed studies that would explore some of the potential impacts providing water to the coal mine would have on area groundwater and rivers (see agenda here).

Join us in working to protect our quality of life, land, water and communities from the coal mine. All who are concerned about Sunrise Coal, LLC’s proposed Bulldog mine in Vermilion County are invited to participate. Coal mines are water intensive, and generate huge quantities of harmful waste.

At this meeting, we will prepare for the Water Committee meeting on July 30th, 2012 in Homer, where the Village of Homer will consider whether or not to sell the community’s water to the mine for washing coal.

Village to Discuss Water Sale Tonight in Homer

Click for map of area Groundwater Resources

At its meeting tonight, July 9th, at 7:00pm the Village of Homer Board will consider requests from Sunrise Coal LLC to purchase water and sewer services for their proposed coal mine.

This is the first time that any action related to Sunrise’s proposed coal mine will have been officially addressed at a village board meeting. The demand for large quantities of water for coal washing and underground operations is a critical concern to East Central Illinois landowners, residents, farmers and concerned citizens, who rely on the area’s limited supply of clean groundwater and surface water for drinking, agriculture and recreation.

We urge everyone to attend the meeting to learn about the water and sewer issues and voice their concerns to elected officials. The meeting will take place at the Village Hall, 500 East 2nd Street in Homer, IL.

UPDATE: Sunrise Coal’s request for water is now available. This request will be considered at the July 30th meeting of the Water Committee at 7:00pm at the Village Hall, 500 East 2nd Street in Homer, IL. This meeting is open to the public.

Video Release: Questions for Sunrise Coal

Join the conversation on our Facebook page, and help us act to protect our community from coal. Along with a broad group of local stakeholders, we have begun a petition drive (look for an online version here next week) to urge local decision makers to put our land, air and water first.

Today Stand Up To Coal partnered with Salt Fork Friends, the Salt Fork River Runners, and Prairie Rivers Network to release the video “Questions for Sunrise Coal”.

In the video, concerned rural residents, farmers, and villagers ask what will happen if Sunrise Coal moves forward with their proposal to open a coal mine in Vermilion County: What will coal mining mean for clean water? The health of our residents? The economic vitality of this area for future generations?
