Join us and your neighbors as we bring updates on Sunrise Coal’s (Hallador Energy) proposed Bulldog Coal Mine in southwest Vermilion County. With recent water sales, land sales, and Sunrise Coal’s evolving plan regarding their permit, come and hear what has transpired. Bring a friend and your questions to these meetings. Everyone is welcome.

Website Additions

Recently we have added two new features to our website.

We have added contact information for Illinois politicians.  Look for the “Contact Your Local Politicians” menu under the “Get Involved” menu above to find your legislators and local elected officials.

We have also added our Twitter feed to the sidebar on the right.  This provides us with a chance to share some of the daily coal-related stories from around the country.  You can use the links to follow @standuptocoal or to send us a tweet.

Georgetown and Sunrise Coal:  Update on Georgetown’s Water and proposed coal mine near Homer, IL

Note: Questions must be submitted in writing at the beginning of the meeting; the mayor’s daughter will sort through them and pass them off to either the mayor, a  Sunrise Coal PR person, or the engineering consultants to answer. Unfortunately, the Mayor of Georgetown is not allowing spontaneous questions from the floor. Please prepare for this meeting by jotting down your questions on small separate sheets of paper. For  last minute questions, we’ll have paper and pencils on hand at the meeting.

 

Background:

After nearly a month of requesting this meeting and after Stand Up To Coal and Prairie Rivers Network held our own meeting, the City of Georgetown has finally agreed to hold a public meeting to answer questions about the contract between Georgetown and Sunrise Coal, LLC for production water for the proposed Bulldog Mine.

This meeting is being held at an inconvenient time for many participating in the Georgetown Fair and has not received any news coverage of which we’re aware.

Georgetown Water Contract

Here is a copy of the signed contract between Georgetown, IL and Sunrise Coal, LLC (Hallador Energy) for production water for the proposed Bulldog Mine.  This copy was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.  Georgetown has not made it easily available or discussed its specifics in public.

Major points of the contract include:

  • 300,000 gallons/day for the first 2 years
  • 500,000 gallons/day for the next 28 years
  • This is for treated drinking water, even though it is being used for washing coal
  • Sunrise Coal will pay to install the 12-mile pipeline from Georgetown to the mine surface facility
  • Georgetown will then be given all of the infrastructure
  • Sunrise Coal will pay residential rates ($8.80/1000 gallons) for the first year.  They will negotiate a rate to be paid the remaining years.  The contract stipulates this should be a discounted rate.
  • The contract is for 30 years.  Sunrise Coal has an option to extend for another 10 years.  Georgetown cannot veto the extension.
  • The contract can be transferred if Sunrise Coal chooses to sell their facility.
